Open the doors and love people

They had 3 members in the church 18 months ago. Yesterday the place felt half full with over 25 people, mainly young people and little ones adding to the service a wonderful buzz and playful noise that only children can bring!

I was there to do the talk and also to encourage my friend Sue who serves as the pastor and her husband Arnie who lead the Baptist Church in Sutton St James.

At the end of the day when I left I was the one deeply encouraged and full of hope. You see Sue is a former student of The Light Project and replanted the church in Sutton St James after setting up Light Project Peterborough, which now has a team running a beautiful day centre for people who are homeless, the winter night shelter and the city centre chaplaincy.

Sue has taken much of what she has learnt with our course and applied it into growing the local church, not with people who have been to church before but with people from the community who are coming to faith.

The church is growing, I believe as as they have a very simple way of operating-

“we open the doors and love people!”

This straight forward approach seems to be working and it fills me with hope.

If more and more of us can simply engage with people with the love of God and bring good news in ways that connect and make sense to people then the church can grow!

As a bit of a bonus and as part of the after church tea and biscuits I got to have fun and make balloon animals for the children!

  1. “This simple approach seems to be working and it fills me with hope. We definitely need ways to connect with people that make them feel valued and at ease. Great way to start up a conversation. Thrilled at what Sue and Arnie are achieving both in a church and Peterborough Light Project. It works and it is effective. May it be an inspiration for many to take out the good news in many different loving and innovative ways.
