My friend Nicky turns 50 this week. Coupled with such a landmark Birthday is her new role as a pioneer minister for Hamptons East near Peterborough.
I was asked to paint for her to mark these too momentous occasions in her life and this is what I created:
The inspiration for the painting came about while staying for a week over Easter on Bardsey, which has a lighthouse.
Each night its rays of light would beam out for any to see. A warning to ships not to stray too close to the rocks, but also an indication of where the island was.
The lighthouse could not help but beam out light into the darkness and my friend Nicky is like that too.
‘You are the light of the world’ Jesus declares. Nicky really does shine the light of hope and purpose for people who lack both.
See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.
Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
‘Lift up your eyes and look about you:
all assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar,
and your daughters are carried on the hip.
