Today we had our team bible study from some verses found in Mark chapter 8. What really stood out for me as we grappled with the text is the way Jesus asked questions. Soooooo many of them!

  • Why are you talking about having no bread?”

  • “Do you still not see or understand?”

  • “Are your hearts hardened?”

  • “Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear?”

  • “…don’t you remember?”

  • “…how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

  • “Do you still not understand?”

  • Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

  • “Who do people say I am?”

  • “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

As part of our bible study towards the end we always ask the question ‘what is God asking us to do from the scriptures?’ The answer I felt was that we should emulate Jesus and ask more questions to those we meet!

So we went out in the afternoon to do a small fruit ‘of the spirit’ stall to give away fruit that we had labelled with the different parts of the fruit of the Spirit. The kind of questions we asked were:

  • What do you need?
  • Do you know what this means?
  • Why did you choose that particular fruit?
  • Can we pray for you?

I feel quite challenged to ask people more and more questions like: ‘would you like a new start in life?’ ‘Would you like to become a Christian?’

How about you? What kind of questions could you be asking your friends and family to help them in understanding what they think about Jesus?
