Yesterday I tried to do some street theology as part of the Tree of Life project in Birmingham, it lasted 6 minutes before I was kicked out of the shopping centre by 2 burly security guards.
This is what I did: I took a huge sandwich board that declared, ‘stick your gum here.’ Below the garish pink lettering was a beautiful picture of Jesus on the cross. The idea was to engage with people about what atonement/ propitiation/ expiation means. Some people said, ‘that’s not very nice sticking gum on Jesus.’ I simply replied, ‘that’s the whole point.’ One lad said that he would receive a piece of free gum but didn’t want to stick it on Jesus. Yet, when I explained what the point of the picture was, that Jesus had taken upon himself all the rubbish and brokenness of the world, that he had taken upon himself this man’s sin, he also stuck his gum on the picture.
